In my city English appears differently in a bus stop and a shopping mall because each space serves distinct social functions. At bus stops, English is minimal and functional: words like 'bus stop', route numbers, or international brand logos appear alongside Portuguese. When English occurs there, it often signals basic information for tourists or aligns with brand identity rather than local identity. The main users are commuters, drivers, and occasional visitors, and the meaning is primarily practical and neutral. In contrast, shopping malls display English more visibly and stylistically: store names (e.g., international brands), sale signs reading 'SALE' or 'OUTLET', playlist music in English, and social-media-style slogans. Here English indexes global consumer culture and lifestyle aspirations; it is used by retailers, advertisers, and young shoppers to create prestige, trendiness, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Young people and middle-class consumers are more responsive to these signals, associating English with modernity and higher status. Overall, English in the bus stop conveys functionality and occasional international orientation, while in the mall it constructs identity and desire. Both presences shape behavior: the first guides movement and access, the second shapes aspiration and consumption. Recognizing these differences helps explain how language choices in public spaces reflect social roles and economic strategies.
